CALL FOR APPLICATIONS 2008-2009



The Centre International de Création Musicale (CIRM), the Conservatoire à Rayonnement Régional (CRR) and Nice University (UNS) are organizing a new university degree course. As part of this course, the selected student may participate in an exchange program with the Center for New Music and Audio Technologies (CNMAT) at the University of California, Berkeley:

D.U. (University Diploma) of  “Instrumental composition, Electroacoustic and new Technology” at Master degree level
.

This course is for students of composition who has experience in both instrumental and electroacoustic writing and who wishes to further develop his composition techniques (student must have an academic level equivalent to the final diploma in national or higher conservatories of music).
The course is mainly based on classes on composition, electroacoustic composition techniques, new information technologies, analysis, musicology, and english language.
Thought as a young composer’s residence, it emphasizes the production of new works in the studios of CIRM, CRR and CNMAT (via an exchange agreement), using current technologies developed by centers of creative work. The first public performances of the works shall be presented the following year at the MANCA festival in Nice. The young composer are promoting as professional and benefit of all communication on their creation within the framework of the MANCA festival (journalist’s meetings, link with the website of CIRM...)

Teaching will be organized in two university semesters : the first will be in Nice, France from October to December 2008 , the second in Berkeley, California from January to May 2009. 

Students will also benefit from the masterclasses of special guests composers, such as:
François Bayle, Alexandro Markeas, Jérôme Combier, Serge de Laubier (Meta-Instrument), Jan Maresz, Myra Melford, Cindy Cox…


The students will receive grants from the partner’s program which will cover traveling expenses and the costs of accommodation in the host country.

Students’ applications must include a hand-written covering letter, a curriculum vitae, two pieces of music (of around ten minutes each, including one piece with one or more instrumental scores presented in written notation form, and the other with at least one part in recorded form), and a brief description of the future composition project and its connection with new technologies.
